Hi David
The oddest thing about Greenberg's suggestion is that he doesn't claim it as his own (or a product of his own overactive imagination, as critics might put it); he just relays it as if this 'fourth movement hiccup-and-gurgle' was well-known and accepted. Yet I've been unable to track down any other reference to the idea. That was partly why I mentioned it here, to see if the serried ranks of MWI experts can shed any light.
In other words, it's probably nonsense, but it's quite funny nonsense. Whether, once the idea's in your head, it enhances one's appreciation of the symphony or ruins it forever, I guess is personal taste...
And yes, hopefully I'm not alone in really enjoying your articles. I find these kinds of items generally more interesting than the narrow-focus ones: those are great for when you're looking for that specific thing (RM's surveys, for instance), but for a casual browse that sucks you in, and gives you new ideas or works to investigate, yours and things like them are superb.
Or in short, I'm very much looking forward to further installments!
Cheers,
Simon
Simon
Interesting idea of Greenberg's, though I'm not sure I agree with him. Thanks for mentioning it, and encouraging me with the thought that my articles are being read.
