Re: Ralph Moore's survey of La damnation de Faust
Good to hear that you take on Idomeneo! And I realize that my reaction to Gedda's recordings has a lot to do with hearing him more or less annually here in his home town Stockholm for forty years, starting when I was a young teenager. Highlights from RCA's La traviata with Valletti was the first LP I bought. I then bought the highlights from RCA's Don Giovanni where he of course is Ottavio. In November 1961 when I was almost 14 I heard him in that part in his only guest appearance here, and thought it very similar to his recording. Since then he is a favourite, and I was happy to find his Berlioz Faust excellent although I think by 1967 he had started to retire (but he was only 46 that year).
