I think Ralph and Nick are absolutely spot on with their postings, but you may like to know that Manfred Honeck's recording of Brahms's Fourth Symphony was very nearly MWI's Recording of the Year last December, being pipped to the top spot by just one vote. I think we all need to recognise too that recordings of the standard repertoire aren't as commonplace as previously, which isn't helping either.
Best wishes,
lee
I must admit I make a concious effort in my reviews not to simply fall back on a personal favourite/well-known recording before giving a new disc its due. It is so simple to become imprinted with a version of a work that something that is not "worse" just "different" can be overlooked. But that said I do find that many of the older performances seem to have greater individual character in terms of instrumental/orchestral sound and interpretation than more modern equivalents.
Personally I love nothing more than a new recording coming along which I do feel supplants previously loved versions. But that is - in my experience - rare......
I have noticed recently on MWI, that recommendations increasingly refer frequently to older recordings as preferred (I will not say "best"!). Unlike a well known magazine that thinks only recent recordings are worthy of comparisons.
If this is deliberate then well done!
