I have the downloads of these operas so side breaks are not an issue. I looked at the timings for Siegfried as determined by the tagging program Yate and Act 1 runs at just over 82 minutes, Act 2 at 74 minutes, Act 3 is just shy of 81 minutes. Generally speaking, the maximum time for a CD is considered to be 79 minutes & 59 seconds but some record labels have pushed this limit. Personally, I don't think I've seen anything over 82 minutes but, apparently, a CD-R can pack more on than a traditional CD. Technically Acts 1 & 3 could fit on a single CD but older equipment may not be able to play it (74 minutes would be the max). I'm guessing the decision to use four discs was to maintain maximum compatibility with older CD players.
