First of all, apologies for the delayed response.
No, I would not say all re-mastered recordings are the definitive version of a work. The early attempts
when CD's first appeared, in particular, were often 'hit & miss' but not unexpectedly as the technical
wizards polished their skills and have improved software etc. available the results are, more often than
not, better. May I refer you to the Szigeti and Gounod discs among today's reviews (2nd October)?
There are, of course, those who rigidly remain with their treasured vinyl editions and I would not want
them to deny themselves of their preferred experience.
As for your second paragraph, I cannot fully agree, as that statement re producers 'knowing' the sound
the artist wanted would I think be based on discussions with older colleagues and the artist's written
notes or memoirs. But I am not a producer so this is hypothetical.
Furthermore, not having heard the artist 'live' surely does not preclude someone from responding to
and enjoying a vintage performance, does it?
