The Charles Ives Society is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1973 to stimulate interest in the music of America's iconoclastic composer, Charles Ives (1874-1954). The Society's president and treasurer, Donald Berman, has announced that on 20 October 2024 it will be the sesquicentennial of Ives' birth and an opportunity to remind music lovers of every age, gender, ethnicity and country of origin how much Charles Ives has contributed not only to music but to the culture at large. Mr. Berman says, "We have done an extensive preparation for Ives' sesquicentennial, and over the next twelve months we will be presenting an enormous body of work that is the result of years of careful curation by editors, archivists, scholars, documentarians and performing musicians who have been examining and re-evaluating the vast Ives oeuvre, and from many different vantage points."
First off is the inauguration of a series of videos, From the Ives Studio, to be posted online via the Charles Ives Society's website www.charlesives.org Each month during 2024, the Society will post a new commentary by a scholar, writer or performer offering a very personal perspective on Ives. All videos on charlesives.org will be available in perpetuity, gratis. The first of these Commentaries is now available to view.
The Society is also working with specific performing musicians to provide advice, resources and research to be used in programming and recording works of Ives leading up to the sesquicentennial. "We do expect that we will see a wealth of new interpretations of Ives' works in the next 18 months, especially given that much of the best recent scholarship on Ives has not been available until relatively recently", says Mr. Berman.
