I’d seen a reference to a recording of the Te Deum and look forward to that but the Sonata for String Orchestra was new to me. Jeremy Dibble is, of course, a great advocate for Stanford and the string quartets are all well worth hearing so that should be a winner and we can only hope it will also be recorded!
The church music is nonpareil and I first became a Stanford fan more than sixty years ago as a choirboy singing the B flat Mag and Nunc – and a little later wondering what the symphonies might sound like. It was some time before I found out and still remember my excitement at getting hold of Norman Del Mar’s recording of the Irish Symphony over forty years ago!
