I, too, applaud Lyrita for this project! I wish, however, that regardless of name, the Symphonic Mass of 1992/93 had been included in *this* boxed set. It will (may be?) shuffled off into another box of choral/religious works of Lloyd, which would be a shame. The Symphonic Mass is, in my opinion, Lloyd's last masterpiece of truly symphonic writing, his "Symphony 13" in all but name. Big orchestra; big chorus; no soloists - it deserves inclusion in George Lloyd's symphonic canon, because "symphonic" is the operative word...and it is, indeed, one of his very greatest works.
Thanks to Jonathan Woolf for his excellent review of Symphonies 1-6. It is indeed good news that these recordings are being made available in this way. Like Jonathan I still remember my first encounter - an LP from the library of the 5th in the 1980s - and the whole cycle is well worth getting to know. Perhaps the 5th is still my favourite but the 4th 8th and 12th run it close...
