English Music on BBC Radio 3 Posted by Sonataman on September 23, 2006, 10:32 am 86.142.94.107 This morning on BBC Radio 3's Saturday morning 'Record Review' programme Andrew McGregor is playing extracts from some of the first batch of recordings of English music from the revitalised Lyrita label including: TIPPETT The Midsummer Marriage onLYRITA SRCD2217 ALWYN Miss Julie on LYRITA SRCD2218 RUBBRA Symphony No. 6, Op.80, Symphony No.8, Op.132, Soliloquy for Cello and Orchestra, Op.57 on LYRITA SRCD234 G. WILLIAMS Fairest of Stars, Ballads for Orchestra & Symphony No.2 on LYRITA SRCD327 D. JONES Symphony No.9, Symphony No.6 & The Country Beyond the Stars on LYRITA SRCD326 STANFORD Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor, Op.126, Irish Rhapsody No.4, Op.141 & the Funeral March 'The Martyrdom' from Becket, Op.48 on LYRITA SRCD219 G. BUSH Overture, Yorick, Music for Orchestra, Symphonies No.1 & Symphony No.2. I hope this is a start of the BBC taking English music more seriously.  Post a Response

Maybe you should inform the BBC of their error in saying English instead of British. I close to ignore it and focus on the general point they were making. I know that these 3 composers are not English born. I assume the BBC are referring to the fact that at least two of them lived and composed in England for a considerable time. The Irish born Stanford spent, say, 80% of his life and carried out virtually all of his composing in England. At least, to my knowledge, Tippett, Alwyn, Rubbra and G.
