I do not profess to be an expert here but maybe the following information that I have seen can throw some light on the situation. Wolfgang Sander in the ECM New Series booklet notes to their release Cat. No. ECM 1874 explains that the, “fourth string quartet, Op.22 (1921), was long referred to as his third: scholars, preferring to follow publishers’ information, chose to ignore the Op.2 quartet that Hindemith himself always included in the enumeration although it was never published during his lifetime.” String Quartets Regards, Michael |
