Lyrita Posted by David Brown on June 28, 2007, 5:27 pm 62.140.211.130 What a joy it is to see the consistent reissue of, and issue of new, Lyrita recordings after all the years of waiting and wondering. It's a particular pleasure to see lined up for June reissue the wonderful Edward Downes recordings of George Lloyd's Fourth, Fifth, and Eighth Symphonies, on which we first learned these gorgeous works all those years ago. Maybe they will raise interest in Lloyd again now that the flow of new recordings on Albany has hit the bottom of the barrel. However (there's always a but), where in the Lyrita reissue programme are the equally fine recordings of Havergal Brian's equally wonderful Symphonies 6 & 16? Month by month as all sorts of other things turn up they remain obstinately missing from the lists. Anyone know? And does anyone think, as I do, that they were always one of the sets MOST, not least, urgently needing to be brought back into the light? The only thing better would be some NEW Brian recordings!  Post a Response

Hopefully its not too long before it comes out here in the US. Does anyone know why Lyrita made all these recordings and never released them until now? TJ  Post a Response

European and British releases usually precede North American by 6 to 8 weeks though sometimes sooner. For your reference, here are the current Lyrita reissues on CD. It can take up to a couple of months for new releases to filter through to distributors. How quickly Amazon.com pick it up is a different matter - it could be very soon after the distributor gets them, or it could take a while for the new releases to work their way through the system. We badly need a CD version of his Tenth Symphony, which together with Ivanov's 11th Symphony and Stanley Bate's Third is one of the most significant gaps in the current catalogue. Also, why has Dorati's Copland Third Symphony never been issued on CD?  Post a Response

I don't think that the Dorati version (which I have never heard but read rave reviews of) has ever been available on CD.  Post a Response

Re: Lyrita Posted by Dennis on November 3, 2007, 5:19 pm, in reply to "Lyrita" 67.171.252.254 This may be a slight diversion, but I have not seen much mention of a very special situation involving Lyrita releases, and that is the fact that they are available on the eMusic site (www.emusic.com). With the number of free downloads available as a paid monthly subscriber, one could very easily acquire a half-dozen recordings for the price of one CD. I know I have added some real gems recently to my collection (the Boult/Moeran Symphony, Finzi Concertos, Alwyn Concertos and Arnold Dances) that I could not have afforded otherwise. I find the sonic quality completely acceptable and without the edginess that sometimes become apparent with digital recordings. If anyone wants some additional info about the eMusic experience, let me know (I am NOT a bot, just an enthusiast).  Post a Response
