Ries Sonatas Op.1 Posted by Artur on July 20, 2007, 3:14 pm 201.78.105.144 Odd review to my accounts... why does the reviewer like to say so much that Ries was influenced by an 8-year-old Schubert? Why can't people be fairer to Ries and maybe point out otherwise, that Ries may have influenced Schubert instead?  Post a Response

Re: Ries Sonatas Op.1 Posted by chris howell on July 23, 2007, 5:35 pm, in reply to "Re: Ries Sonatas Op.1" 213.215.159.44 There's a whole repertoire of piano music by composers like Dussek and Tomasek which influenced any composer at the time who didn't want to go the whole way with Beethoven - including Schubert and, evidently Ries. Since this repertoire is almost unknown, I can hardly blame a critic who does not spot these influences. But did the writer of the booklet notes not provide any help? Chris Howell  Post a Response

Ries was certainly studying with Beethoven by then (he communicated the, and claims to have been the subject of, the "box-on-the-ears" story involving the Eroica symphony, after all...) Not claiming that Ries was trying for anything Waldsteinish in his own 1804-or-so compositions, though (or in his first symphony of 1809, either. His 4th symphony is indeed more ambitious and I think somewhat successfully so, and I'm not surprised his 6th symphony retained some popularity for awhile- but that was later!)  Post a Response
