Schnabel's Beethoven Posted by Tim Perry on September 25, 2007, 5:57 am 203.20.79.132 I stumbled across a ridiculously cheap set of Schnabel's Beethoven sonata cycle from Membran. I'm very tempted to snap it up, but was wondering if anyone has heard these Membran transfers? Would I be better off sticking with the Naxos Historical reissues? Any advice? The sound is clean but utterly dead. The Naxos are very well done so sample before going cheaper still. Chris Howell  Post a Response

The Membran transfers are fair and, if you can obtain the set cheaply enough (I paid 6 pounds) it's a useful way to get to know the performances. You can then move on to the Naxos transfers which are superb, although much more expensive.  Post a Response
