I remember his name well from BBC broadcasts when I was barely a teenager and the name stuck firmly in my mind as Vintner. It was only quite recently, as a result of nearly making the same mistake myself, that I discovered Vinter was the correct form. It sounds as though John Sheppard has similar memories to mine. References to him on internet are even now divided about 50-50 between the two forms. I wonder why the mistaken form appeared so often? Chris Howell  Post a Response

Haven't read the article in question yet but I do know that he wrote some wonderful brass band pieces. His 'Spectrum' was controversial at the time for its 'modern' sounds, something bands were not used to in the 1960s. His pieces are still relatively popular with bands nowadays, I believe. Indeed, 'James Cook, Circumnavigator' is currently being used as the 1st section test piece for the regional qualifiers of the National Brass Band Championships. I must admit, I've never listened to his light orchestral works, but seeing this thread may well prompt me to explore them! Any particular recommendations?  Post a Response

Chris, I can sympathise with this sort of error. Although my surname is perhaps more open to mis-spellings, believe me, there are people I have known for years who still insist on sticking an 'e' on the end of it! ;-) ....................... I suspect it is simply because many people were named by their profession so Vintner is subconciously anticipated. I equally and frequently get mispelt as Mullinger Len  Post a Response
