The "easy" item could have been turned into a "fiendish" one by stopping the extract much sooner, before the voice enters. The name of the composer is writ large over those opening bars but as we don't principally associate him with vocal writing I must say that up to that point I was thinking of anything but what it was, even though I knew I'd heard the music. As for the "fiendish" item, I think I can relate it to a geographical area (and period), but I'll have to wait till next Friday to see if it's a little-known work by the major composer of that area or something from one of the many who sound a bit like him.
