Moeran's Cello Concerto (Peers Coetmore-Lyrita) Posted by Jeffrey Davis on April 10, 2008, 8:15 am 195.93.21.40 Like Rob Barnett, I greatly welcomed the return of this "old friend" from my early days of collecting Lyrita LPs. It's reappearance at a similar time to Havergal Brian's 6th and 16th Symphony and David Morgan's Violin Concerto and "Contrasts" is a cause of triple rejoicing for me! I just wanted to say there is a depth of feeling in this performance which, in my view, despite the technical infelicities of Miss Coetmore's playing, transcends that of the(very good) Chandos alternative recording. Maybe this has something to do with Boult's magisterial accompaniment with the LPO. Whatever the reasons (and they may well be partly connected with nostalgia), I was delighted by the reappearance of this recording.  Post a Response

Like Mr France, I bought that old Lyrita LP back in the 70s and fell in love with the music (if not with Miss Coetmore, to the same extent as the youthful Mr France!) I also, entirely agree with Mr France that, whatever the criticisms of Miss Coetmore's playing, this performance has a poetry about it that is missing in the very good Chandos alternative. The climax of the last movement is overwhewlming. Boult's accompaniment is magical. In some ways, I think that the Cello Concerto is Moeran's masterpiece. Thank you.  Post a Response
