Brendel's approach in D960 is, in his live CD (Philips 475 7191) both lyrical and dramatic. The DVD recording of the 1970s now on Euroarts (in which he gives his opinions on and reasons for leaving out some repeats) does demonstrate some differences in approach between studio and stage, but I think the charactertistic one can best look for in his playing is that of 'innigkeit'. This elusive quality may be superficially less inspiring than with some pianists, but will always satisfy some needs, some of the time. Uchida does the 1st movement repeat as well, and I love her Philips D.960 despite the rather duff sound. I'm just discovering and still trying to make up my mind about Paul Berkowitz on Meridian. Schubert's D960 is a constant voyage of discovery for me and I suspect many others, and I would always be suspicious of anyone claiming definitive status for any recording. Brendel is not my first choice, but neither is my copy up for sale!
