Reviewing the new recording of this work by Mario Venzago, Dominy Clements refers today to "An American in Paris played by the Victor Symphony Orchestra and conducted by George Gershwin in 1929" This performance is usually described as conducted by Nat Shilkret, with Gershwin taking the piano and celeste parts. Has new info come to light? According to the notes by Charles Levin in the Pearl transfer, "Gershwin became such a pest during rehearsals, offering incessant suggestions to Shilkret as to precisely how this or that passage could go that he was awarded the instrumental parts on condition that he absent himself from the studio until the actual recording"

My reference was the 2003 Allegria release (221095) which has this information clearly stated on the real label (not visible through the link below or via Amazon).
