No, actually. If nobody ever said that Lloyd Webber's first name was Andrew, nobody would know whether Andrew or Julian was meant. Usually, of course, the first name is used alone as professional name (Solomon, Midori) but the other way round (Heifetz, Toscanini etc) is common usage. Nearly everyone would say Callas without her first name, for instance, but not Lehmann, as there might be confusion as to which artist was meant, Lilli or Lotte.
