The late Prof. Hudson, when setting up the Stanford Archive in the Robinson Library of Newcastle University, not only gathered together all the manuscript material he could persuade those holding it to donate or loan permanently, and all the printed scores he could find, but also amassed photocopies of as much material as possible which could be located, but of which the originals could not be obtained. The Library staff are very helpful to enquirers and their costs are low. I can't speak for the violin concerto, but I have obtained from them copies of violin/piano and piano works they hold, and also of some works which are held elsewhere (BL, RCM) but of which they had a photocopy. |
Re the unpublished string quartets, according to the info in Prof. Dibble's study of Stanford, Newcastle have autograph parts of no.4, autograph score and parts of no.6 and autograph scores of 7 & 8, while the National Library of Ireland has the autograph score of no.4. In the 1960s a quartet led by Carl Pini broadcast no.8, so parts existed at some time.
While I am sure Newcastle would be helpful, they do require a copyright waiver with an original signature before copying anything, since the 70-year copyright rule runs from publication and so hasn't even begun yet (some argue it runs from the first performance, but not all these unpublished works have been performed, as far as is known).
For example, I obtained permission from the RSCM to record the 6 Irish Marches and 2 other pieces for violin/piano on my recent Sheva set - they provided a copyright tag to be placed on the recording details.
