However, I would at least partly defend Robert Farr. Good as it is that Iris has been seen in Bard College and Holland Park, they aren't the Met or Covent Garden which is where these operas properly belong. And La Scala, supposedly the shrine of Italian opera, has a deplorable record re this area of the repertoire. Last season they actually announced a programme of reassessment of verismo and put on a well-received Le Cena delle Beffe, but this season there's not a trace, unless they think (I certainly don't) that doing the "original Butterfly" counts.
By the way, William Alwyn, in an article in opera, rated Il Piccolo Marat as one of the top five music dramas of the 20th century (I wish I could remember his other four, but they were fairly unsurprising)
