'Spirituals for orchestra'?! Whoever wrote this piece, admired by Mr Shoemaker apparently, it certainly wasn't Copland!  Post a Response

Certainly it was an error, but I regret most that it obscured the real point of my review. I wasn't being "polemical" but was reacting to a widespread polemical over-praise of Copland. I know he was a nice man and I really do like some of his music, particularly his chamber music, as the review said. He is in once sense his own enemy; Copland's less than brilliant recording of his own Third Symphony seems to have swept off the boards the really good version by Antal Dorati. Another point of my review was to urge the restoration that Dorati recording to the lists, and in this I hope all Copland lovers will join with me.  Post a Response

Paul's review was very positive towards Copland's Chamber music and this is one of the Discs of the Month. Celebrate that instead of looking for things to gripe about. I have altered Sprituals for orchestra to Spirituals for Strings which will no doubt now change your whole opinion of his review. Len  Post a Response

Two weekends ago a well known Sunday Times reviewer of the new Hyperion recording of Stanford’s first and second String Quartets/Horn Fantasy incorrectly credited someone with a reconstruction of the Horn Fantasy. In fact the score exists complete along with a less legible set of parts. All that was needed an editorial eye before it was recorded certainly not a reconstruction. Instead I am just grateful that anyone is prepared to volunteer their time and effort in the prodigious quantities exhibited by most MusicWeb contributors - none of whom receive any remuneration.
