The 509th was an Army Engineer company that built a special type of expedient bridge called the Bailey or Panel Bridge. It was somewhat like a huge erector set and a small creek could be spanned in an afternoon. The unit designation ususally went like this "509th Engineer Co. (PB)" which of course stands for the Panel Bridge. I served in the 509th in 1968 and 1969 when it was in Viet Nam. The HQ was on Engineer Hill near Pleiku but we moved all around the II Corps region. The stateside home for the unit was at Fort Riley Kansas but it has been decommissioned for some time now.
