My uncle, Earl Krogstad, was a gunner with Co. A. For a time during training in England, he was the gunner in Vodra Phillips' tank, though he was not assigned there at the time of the invasion. As near as I've been able to find out, his tank swamped as it offloaded at Omaha. He died of exposure. Between April 1942 and May 1944 he wrote about 150 letters home, which I have. They provide a great sense of what life was like for the men of the 743rd training in Washington, Arizona, and California. Earl also attended gunnery school at Ft. Knox, KY. When they shipped out to England, he stopped talking about anything related directly to operations. The last letter we have from him is May 30, 1944.
