thanks for the kind words marty and give bobby my regards. I just did a radio interview with dan the man and tomas last nite. I believe they are in your area;these little stations have been helping to sustain our music; I hope people in your area continue to support these guys. Many of the stations such as kxtn in s.a., our corporate owned usually by people who have no idea what our music is. People talk about the golden years from '86 to '96; tejano music became very popular; I helped to bring the major record labels to texas which enabled many artists to get signed, marketed and distributed; the result of this encouraged more radio stations all over to play tejano music;more music was being recorded and more albums were being sold. radio stations were thriving with advertizing money and record labels were making profits from our small market.
we live and breath our music because it is part of us. it is bred in our culture and manefasted throughout generations of mexican americans everywhere. This does not mean anything to record labels or radio stations. when you sign with a major label , it is with the latin division usually controlled by cubans who have no idea or conception of who we are as a people nor care much about our music. they are not in the business of preserving our music.they are in the business of making money.when I signed little joe to c.b.s , now sony, he was out selling julio iglesias in the u.s.; record labels started getting greedy and wanted to distribute product to other countries. radio stations were owned by anglos who again could care less about our music.many of our artists were led along like sheep to the slaughter changing styles to accomadate the labels in hope of obtaining more sales outside the u.s. STOP!!!!!!!!! i'm sorry marty' if I continue on I could write a book on the subject and you are probably thinking, "get to the point bob". I would rather talk on these issues than post. I hate the computer. lol, the point to all this is that to answer these kind of questions honestly, at least for me, can not be answered in a quick sentence; I am glad though that they are being asked. If you are really interested in the state of our market and have other questions, email me ontheedge@prodigy.net and leave your phone number, I will personally call you and try to answer all your questions to the best of my ability. I feel now at this stage of my career, to educate others about the music business is just as important as recording and performing. I am encouraging promoters everywhere to consider bringing my all star orquestra to venues such as universities to do concerts in conjuntion with clinics to demonstrate by performing and discussing the different aspects of our unique style of music; a music created by our culture. A true original art form.
gracias, bob gallarza.
: Bob: To my knowledge, you are one of the few
: musician/producers of your caliber who seems
: interested in what we "the fans"
: think or have to say. The fact that you read
: and have commented on this message board,
: tells me that. And while you are right,
: "you can't please everyone", I
: hope you recognize that we read and write
: what's being said here because we are all
: fans of tejano music. And while we don't
: always agree, it is tejano music that unites
: us all together. A question for you. What in
: your opinion has happened to the radio
: station coverage of tejano music? I don't
: live in Texas, but I have heard and read
: enough about KXTN and others who seemed to
: have turned their back on many of the tejano
: artist in general. How can San Antonio radio
: stations known for years as the Tejano
: Capital of the world, not be supportive of
: both past and current artist? Regards. Marty
: B. In K.C.
: PS: Bob Rodriguez, one of your past
: trumpet/keyboard player here in Kansas City
: says "Hello".

: as they say , "you can't please
: everyone". To be honest gentleman, I
: probably would have picked different
: material myself had it been my call, but
: this was little joe's call; having said that
: , this material is new to a lot of younger
: generation who don't even know who tierra
: tejana is . A lot of these groups are no
: longer recording and alot of that material
: can no longer be bought. Little Joe wanted
: to give homage to his peers of his
: generation of artists buy redoing some of
: their most known hits. In my humble opinion
: , this was very unselfish of him. He wanted
: to give homage to a time when all these
: songs were being played; a time when the
: music was pure chicano. Belive me when I
: tell you that if little joe had wanted to
: just highlight himself, there are plenty of
: other songs he could have done; and by the
: way , this is not the last cd we intend to
: do. we have plans to do one with he and his
: brother johnny (all new material), and some
: other projects that we will talk about in
: the future.
: Look guys, I think this cd was well done and
: well worth the price you paid for it
: regardless of the material. What is more
: important, is that we need to continue
: recording our style of music for our
: children's childrens sake. Some of the
: groups that you have mentioned , Bandango,
: Cruizers, etc. our all friends of mine, but
: they and other new developing groups have to
: start doing more work. You cannot sustain a
: market in dire need of material buy doing
: one cd every 4 or 5 years. I myself have
: completed 7 in the last 2 years and I will
: have a new one out by the end of nov.
: Believe me when I say it is not easy to
: record cds of the caliber of
: "chicanisimo", for a lot of
: reasons. MONEY, being one, but God willing,
: we will keep trying to do our best to keep
: our style of music alive.
: gracias, bob gallarza
