I couldn't wait to read this one, so I decided to hold NEW AVENGERS #51 back another week. And what a fabulous read this was, too! McCann is quickly becoming a near-favorite writer, with only two books under his belt! After Mockingbird and Ronin duke it out a bit, they prep up for their mission to prevent AIM, or more specifically the lovely but evil Monica Rappaccini (a Viper-eque character, in my opinion), from setting off a bomb at some conference in Spain. In the meantime, revelations ahoy! First of all, Bobbi has started a brand new SHIELD organization called the WCA (World Counter-terrorist Agency) and she's getting help from all the SHIELD agents who had been replaced by Skrulls, people she knows she can trust. In addition, we learned exactly when Mockingbird was taken by the Skrulls -- during the WCA's battle with Ultron and Alkhema in either AVENGERS WEST COAST #91 or AVENGERS WEST COAST ANNUAL #8. I no longer have those issues so I can't check the exact moment, but McCann cleverly had the moment picked out. So the Mockingbird we saw from AWC #92-100 was a Skrull. Not only that, but Bobbi planned on divorcing Clint back then, but after the switch Mockingskrull claimed she wanted to stay with Clint, likely to remain as a spy. Now, why Mockingbird was taken instead of someone else and exactly what happened to her on the Skrull homeworld, where she was for several years, still remains to be seen, but those answers will be coming next issue. I suspect that by the time the series is over, Mockingbird will strike off on her own and manage the WCA, which means she likely won't be around the New Avengers for much longer, which is fine. McCann is writing Bobbi exactly the way she was being written back in MTU #95 and MARVEL SUPER ACTION #1, stories I love. She's an intelligent, resourceful spy and she's back in the game! I definitely can't wait to see what happens next!
