Sliding traces

Hi all - Just a quickie, can anyone tell me if its ok to use traces that have a sliding middle trace to fit different sized baits ?
Usually l make them fixed but l have seen some traces with moveable trebles ?
Only problem l can see is if the trace slides during the fight it may result in a lost fish !!
Going to try and catch my first esox again tomorrow !!!!!!
