good question mate! for that reason me personnaly i would use a marker float, this is the best way of finding the layout of the bottom. ie ledges,dropoffs,plateus are all good places for finding pike. To do this you'l need to do some research on "feature finding". and setting up a marker float rig. try typeing in "marker float work" in to your search engine.
