In my numerous excursions into Bible related history and viewing maps, I've frequently noted and been puzzled by a particular region in "Palestine" that never seemed to fall under the jurisdiction of anyone. The New Testament mentions it as a region which Jesus briefly entered ("country of the Gadarenes") and also as "Decapolis".
Anyone have any information about Decapolis .... why or how it existed or managed to exist as a seeming independent state in the middle of highly aggressive forces on all sides? (Arabia to the South, Macedonia to the North, Parthians to the east and Rome to the West).
I can't find any really satisfying information on it except for a little tidbit I discovered today and that is ....... Damascus during that time was part of it.
