Instead of "sensible shoes" you should be wearing siliconed hip waders ..... so no insects can climb up.~

PS: I fully understand the ant syndrome. I had a similar experience @ about 4 yo. I was "helping" my mom pick wild strawberries and must have sat down on an ant pile.
All I remember is that we was walking along and suddenly my whole body seemed to turn into leather. I freaked out and never lost my revulsion for ants.
They appear to have some sort of communication system where they all hold off until a certain signal is given ......... and then they all clamp in at once.
