I ALWAYS treat my dogs along with tons of praise and play session for pottying outside. When you figure this is the first "training session" you have with a puppy, is is the best way to start establishing a working relationship. Also, don't they deserve a treat much more for NOT pottying in the house than for a sit or down??? As mine get older, They do not get the trea outside anymore-I start giving it when they come in when called. This way they learn they have to potty AND come back.
