Steve reminds me of this irritating tendency of people to use abbreviations, acronyms and even statements that the user delights in as evidence that he knows something the rest of us don't know. A typical university lecturer's ploy in my subject went something like this: 'Before such a distinguished company as this, there is no need for me to expatiate on Professor Burnett's paper in the summer edition of Philology on Pythagorean Notions of Metempsychosis'. SNOBS will be familiar with this paper, but coming straight from school, all I knew about Pythagoras was a certain theory to do with squares on the hypotenuse and I couldn't and still can't remember how to prove it!
