The outer reaches of Northwood - Frithwood Avenue and Carew Road suffered terribly at his hands; large houses torn down or converted into flats and seedy little dwellings built in droves in their place. I remember many friends whose parents saw the value of their homes plummet as they were surrounded by Bartlett tenements or who were compulsorily purchased by Bartlett and his gang.

Alderman Bartlett is, I would imagine, long dead. THe story went that his mother was in service in Northwood and he was 'getting his own back' against the toffs whom he thought had treated his mother badly.
Many fled to roads just over the border into Herts a mere hundred yards away.
I am a lifelong socialist but the terrible vendetta perpetrated by Bartlett gave socialism a bad name.
