Sorry to come in to this rather late, chaps - I've only just discovered the site. Mr Smith, for all his accomplishments, wasn't a patch on his predecessor John Spurgeon, who played us Cage and Ives and Boulez and anything he could plunder from the (then) American Embassy Music Library. He also, alone among the masters I remember, actively encouraged us to call us by his first name. He took me through O-levels and then left so I had Mr Smith for A-levels. When I announced that I'd got a place at the RAM his response was "What do you expect me to do - throw my hat in the air?" A lovely man to be sure.
