David's funeral will be held on Thursday Jan 10 at 1400, at St Mary's Church, Bocking near Braintree. David's widow is Margot, her address is 24 Meadow Close, Panfield,Braintree,Essex,CM7 5AE, 01376 331217.
I understand that David had an undiagnosed brain tumour, leading to his sudden collapse and death.
We will all recall David's erudition, charm and wit. He always exhuded great bonhomie and never seemed phased by anything - at least not publically. All staff and many pupils will recall his amusing after dinner speeches (end of term; Concorde Centre etc.) and stand-up comedian would clearly have been an option had his Cambridge Degree not indicated a life in education! He always seemed to have time for everyone and possessed the rare gift of making one feel the most important person in his world, if not the World, when meeting.
From St. Nick's, David moved on to become Headmaster of The John Lyon School, Harrow before moving to a Classic post in Brentwood.
He was a Lay-Reader in the Church of England and an accomplished singer. At Cambridge he was a member of Christ's College Choir in the late '50s. More recently he spent time conducting tours to world historic sites on behalf of a travel company.
It is difficult to imagine that David is no longer with us, as he seemed to epitomise all that was good about St. Nicholas Grammar School; a great loss from the staff when he left prior to the school becoming comprehensive in 1977.
To his widow, Margot, and his family, we offer our sincere condolences at this time.
John Hawley
St. Nicholas G. S. 1974-77
