Posted by David Dixon Yes I agree that it is a great shame that the boards have disappeared. It may be that they went at a time when it was not thought proper for some to excel and be recognised. We did after all go through a Romantic period in education, when it was better to try hard than to succeed and so an Honours Board would have been seen as the philosophical enemy of the modern Enlightenment. Perhaps also when the school was transmogrified into Haydon it was felt that Honours relating to an earlier establishment were not appropriate for public display. Regrettable if true, but the logic is understandable. As for where they are now and where they should be displayed, I have little to offer. I think John Hawley is better placed than I to try to ferret them out, if they still exist but I don't believe Emmanuel Church would have them. If you wish to make even small changes to the interior of church buildings in the C of E you have to acquire a faculty from the diocese and I can't see them granting one. The Clubhouse may be a possibilility, but if you have high enough ceilings, Steve, you could house them and charge the rest of us a princely sum to view them ! Tangentially, Steve comments on the horrors of the new buildings. I have not seen them and prefer to keep my memories, but the original building was an architectural disaster. The worst of the awful 1950s style for schools. Nothing to uplift the spirit as we came up Norwich Road or Wiltshire Lane. We had to rely on each other. I would be very sad if those splendid Plenderleith murals at the back of the Hall had been destroyed. Actually Donald painted three of them and the one on the left as you stood on the stage was done by Geoff Dye. 'Plenders' thought highly of Geoff's work. David Dixon

Dear Steve,
More seriously I will confer with John Hawley and see what can be done. Perhaps Peter Cahill knows where they are.
