I would just like to confirm what John Hawley has written. The school closed down officially at the end of August 1977. I left officially at that time for a post at John Lyon so have no doubt about the date. As for names, yes it is true that Haydon was least popular. We all wanted The King's School because of the territorial links with Kings College Cambridge and because it had a ring about it, but we were not told why this was not possible. Perhaps Cambridge withheld approval. I wonder if anyone knows why the popular choice was not accepted? David Dixon
