Personally, I always thought "Savage" was a bit too much hyperbole - and really, only justified in recent history... such as the Search For She-Hulk or Avengers Disassemble Even when she was starting out she was able to speak in proper English - albeit, rather more vexed than her human persona... but I think gammafan is right to use the word "gruff".
But yes, I've not read a great deal of it but Byrne had pretty much made her an easy going green lady by the time she was in the Fantastic Four... And of course he liked her enough to do Sensational She-Hulk and the rest is history.
