The first time I ever laid eyes on the character was seeing Savage She-Hulk # 2 for sale at a Walgreens. Something about the very idea of her totally fascinated me just by the sight of the cover. I mean, sure---female versions of male heroes are a comics staple---but a female version of the Hulk ? The Hulk has qualities that can be viewed as so male-orientated----huge muscles, brute strength and rage. I was dying to see how that could get translated into a female version.
I dug through everything on their shelves hoping I might still find a # 1 there but no such luck. So I bought the second issue and I was hopelessly hooked on She-Hulk (I quickly found Milehigh comics and ordered the missing # 1 !)
So I fell in love with the Savage version but I loved that she gained a sense of humor in Avengers and then John Byrne seemed to bring it together all just right in the pages of FF. Yeah, I was a little surprised that the Sensational series went the route it went---but I do get Byrne wanting to make it so totally different from her previous series.
And while I may not have always liked all of the silliness and 4th wall breaking---the book was fun. And overall I enjoyed it. And it was fun at a time when fun was not the thing to be in comics. Everything was grim and gritty. Sensational was a breath of fresh air.
Then the Dan Slott series seemed to me to be a melding of Savage and Sensational. It was still great fun and funny but there was no more 4th wall breaking and things could have serious repercussions. I felt PAD then also moved in the absolute right and logical progression for the series. So I have absolutely enjoyed every version of this character even though it was the Savage one I first fell in love with.
Where Shulkie goes, I follow !

: Add me to the list of fans of the character in
: just about any version. (There are limits
: -- I'm not sure I'd go for a MAX series --
: but somehow I doubt that'll happen any time
: soon.) Partly, it's because I don't feel
: tied to any one version. The first time I
: encountered the character was in Jose
: Aguirre-Sacasa's Marvel Knights FF series,
: and I'm not sure what version that was.
: Humorous and Sensational, I think. Hard to
: say, since the focus of that issue is Sue,
: but I digress. Point is, I've familiarized
: myself with all versions of the character in
: a relatively short period of time, whereas
: others may have grown up with or focused on
: one version or another.
:
: Most characters get reinvented over the
: years, but usually that's at the surface,
: and so they survive. I'm not positive
: anyone's really defined the core of this
: character. What's her official schtick?
: She-Hulk Smash? She-Hulk Smash the Fourth
: Wall? Jen Hides Behind She-Hulk? I like
: them all, don't get me wrong, and I almost
: get the feeling Mr. David was on the way to
: reconciling them (merging them?) before
: Marvel up and canceled the book.
:
: On a happier note, Jen's finally showing up
: in the Yay!Verse in July. Maybe they'll see
: fit to push her there, as much as they push
: anything in the Marvel Adventures line...

: Sad but true. I do believe this is the
: essential problem with the She-Hulk fanbase.
: I personally want a She-Hulk solo series.
: Whether she's humorous, serious, savage or
: sensational---I will take any version that's
: served. But I realize I am an exception to
: the rule and there aren't enough people out
: there who feel the way I do.

: She-Red Hulk is just having very poor sales,
: in spite of being a Dark Reign tie-in and of
: all the hype.
:
: Yet, Marvel is pushing her in ways that
: never happened to Jen.
:
: Yeah, now, She-Red Hulk (Lyra) is sharing a
: book with Red Hulk, so readers can pick up
: interest in the character.
:
: Can you people understand this?
:
: I can't. This is a bit too much for me.
:
: If Jen had got a push like this, maybe, her
: book might have survived.
:
: Which time? Which canceled version might
: have survived?
:
: See, all the pushes in the world aren't
: going to help when a character has a fan
: base so splintered that there's no one
: component sufficiently large to sustain a
: book. And if the other components don't get
: exactly what they want, not only won't they
: support the character, but some will
: actively lobby for the failure of the one
: that's out there.
:
: So maybe if the humorous She-Hulk will go
: away, then a serious one will be brought in
: and they'll support that.
:
: Or if the serious one goes away so that a
: savage one shows up, they'll support that.
:
: Or if a savage one is dumped in favor of the
: humorous one which was the other people
: wanted to see before they stopped buying it
: because it wasn't humorou, they'll support
: that. Presuming, of course, it's the RIGHT
: humorous one. Are we talking John Byrne
: humor or Dan Slott humor or Peter David
: humor...except why wasn't Peter David's
: version funny? Why did he play it so
: serious? Doesn't he know we all want to see
: She-Hulk breaking the fourth wall, except
: when we don't want to see that because
: that's already been done?
:
: Spider-Girl fans kept that series alive as
: long as they did because they spoke with one
: voice and knew what they wanted. She-Hulk
: gets canceled over and over again because
: unfortunately, all too often, the only thing
: that She-Hulk fans can agree on is that they
: don't want to see what other She-Hulk fans
: like.
:
: You beginning to see why Marvel might be
: interested in pushing a version that doesn't
: come with decade's worth of mutually
: contradictory sets of baggage?
