Posted by Terry Hooper Just kidding! Now,at my age I've seen Hawkmen come and go,I've seen Crises on Infinite Earths,Zero Hours,JSA-JLA cross-overs [the real yearly joy of pre-Crisis DC comics]. I was quite enjoying the current Hawkman series:the art standard was being maintained,the stories were okay but then came Infinite Crisis. So it's now Hawkgirl. I've no problem with that,though I thought the change over was messy and not very satisfactory. Someone has already noted the resurgence in new heroine titles -and,yes,there are reasons for this. I've noticed [in the UK]far more females attending comic conventions....and even going into comic shops!!! Seriously,though,not all women want to read "Mills and Boon",or whatever romantic literature you care to mention. We've seen the rise of the kick-butt female since the 1990s -Lara Croft,Agent Dana Scully and,in any number of films starring Mila Jovovich from Fourth Element to Joan of Arc to a feisty security agent in Resident Evil. With TV,Cinema and computer games bringing all this to us [I guess,initially it was all aimed at prepubescent teenagers]comics HAS to reflect this. We had Ms Marvel,Wonder Woman and She Hulk to mention three. But these times are different. Can a Supergirl or Hawkgirl work today? Well,good art and story will help [how about Frank Cho or even Jaime Hernandez drawing Hawkgirl?]but the proof will be in the villains. A bad sign is if all the villains start to be females! The good thing about the current Hawkgirl is that she has toughed it out with the big boys. Any move away from that to "feminize" her will destroy the character who was/is a pretty tough cookie. Lord forbid in the midst of a battle.... "Oh,drat! I've laddered my tights!" Ahhhh,I remember THAT Batgirl. So,what do you think? Should the title remain Hawkgirl [Hawkman surely needs to be reincarnated -unless DC takes a short cut] and do you think she should go toe-to-toe with the big boys? Who would you like to see draw her? Most of all.......anyone remember Starman?? Terry
