Posted by Sarah (Curmudgeon) SwampWitch Goofer dust and graveyard dirt are both common ingredients in hoodoo (rootwork) spells and also in some non-hoodoo spells. I am not really into hoodoo, but use both items in my spellwork fairly regularly. Graveyard dirt is pretty much a no brainer - it's dirt from a graveyard. Goofer Dust is a mix of various ingredients. Last time I made Goofer Dust I pretty much nabbed the ingredient list from Luckymojo.com (a wonderful website, by the way). Anyhow, into my Goofer Dust I put Graveyard Dirt (the real thing from a graveyard), powdered sulfur (which you can buy or make yourself by powdering match heads but be careful as the heads of matches are ignitable), powdered sea salt, powder made from the shed skins of rattlesnakes, powdered bone, powdered jalapeno pepper, powder made from black peppercorns, anvil dust (lucky that we had horses and my brother was a farrier), mullein and sage. I did not use any set amounts of each, mainly because I had limited amounts of anvil dust and snake skin (I used skin from a very small rattle snake that some friends of mine who taught science in high school had but I've talked to folks who think that the skin from any snake will do). Sooo, when I mixed up the Goofer Dust, since I had no recipe that listed how much of each thing to use, I used what felt 'right' to me of each ingredient. The only ingredient that I added to my Goofer Dust that luckymojo.com didn't mention is that I added some soil from the swamp behind our house... I liked having something in the dust that was 'mine'. I also made the Goofer Dust minus the recommended snail powder, because I wanted to use only ingredients that I had or could find on my own,and frankly, while I had access to snail shells, I just really really didn't want to have to go to the trouble of killing whole snails, drying them and then powdering them. By the way, if you can't make your own Goofer Dust, you can buy it on-line and I'm pretty sure that you can buy some of the ingredients too and mix your own. : The formula that If I knew what spellbook it came from and who might have written it this would help figure out what was meant by church bell grease. By the way, of you want a really good book that is historically accurate about Hoodoo practices, and that will give you lots of good information on Goofer Dust and Graveyard dirt, I'd highly recommend Catherine Yronwode's book "HooDoo Herb and Root Magic: A Materia Magica of African American Conjure".
