The purpose of Witchcraft?

Hi, all! I'm out here in Cali now, and it occurs to me that I have run up against the same lesson I did four years ago--or rather, I should say, the same question.
What is the purpose of Witchcraft? Is it to reach out to your fellow human beings and heal the earth while always examining oneself and one's motivations and attempting to improve and evolve? or is it some sort of elitist club where the "in-crowd" demeans and treats seekers with little dignity and respect?
I am not going to remark any further, since I am apparently already up sh*t creek without a paddle with a certain coven out here. I know the answer SEEMS obvious, and I've spoken to non-Pagan friends about this already, but I wanted to get the feedback from Witchy people like myself.
