Posted by Sylvan SilverNight --Previous Message-- Well, I dunno about "proper". There is power to the shapes and sigils that we use and -certainly- the potency of the pentagram is not to be taken lightly. And, yeah, I've heard about folk who use a pentagram shape for their circles. However, I've always seen the traditional circle shape as being equally powerful. Think of it like this: You have the four cardinal points represented but with the fifth being YOU. You, at the center, are that fifth point. If you want to do something with the circle, though, I'm not really sure how to proceed. The elements are traditionally aligned with the quarters; to create another layout should work, but I'm not sure how you'd align everything. Now, when you ask about a fire in the center, I do have a suggestion: dig a pit. (Get a burning permit, first, but dig a pit.) The pit can be covered when it's not being used, with a platform that's weather-safe and fire-proof. (I'm thinking ceramic or stone if you can make or find something like that.) Then, you can put your altar in the center when you aren't using a bonfire or put it just off-center when a fire is in progress. Another option is to build a firepit in the center but surround it with a circular altar that's low to the ground. Then both are at the center... Finally, if you are in an urban environment (or, as you say, an apartment) find out if you can get permission to go up on the roof for some practices. No one can stare out their windows at you, THEN! Granted, you probably can't build a fire, but -well- you'll have your privacy... I hope this helps! Anyone else? Suggestions? Yours,

: My question goes something like this .....
:
: Right NOW .. I've got my current sphere laid
: out with the North stone facing "true
: North" .. then from there East .. South
: .. and West respectively. I've always
: wondered whether or not it would be MORE
: proper to lay it out in a Pentagram style ..
: except instead of having 4 directions
: (points) to deal with .. there would be 5 ..
: ya know ? Any ideas/suggestions ? If I lay
: it out pentagram style .. how does THAT work
: ? And .. in another vein .. I've toyed with
: the idea of putting/including a firepit in
: the center .. mostly for
: "balefires" .. and other occasions
: where a fire would be appropriate ..
: *shrugs* Of course .. if I do THAT .. then
: the center would be taken up .. and the idea
: of a "proper" altar is moot ..
: isn't it ? If given the choice .. I'd
: rather have an altar than a firepit .. but
: .. (scratches head) .. I don't know. I ALSO
: like the "idea" of leaving the
: "center" blank .. so I'd have a
: good place to do my meditation/visualisation
: practices .. *shrugs again* .. ya know ?
: It's all so very confusing (to me). Any
: help here ? Just curious.
