You are supposed to use the quadratic formula for these exercises. Examples 3 and 4 on pages 419 and 420 show you what the formula is and how to use it. An important thing to remember is that the equation must be in descending order and set = to 0.
ax^2+bx+c=0
The number in front of x^2 is a, the number in front of x is b, and the number without an x is c.
Then
x=(-b+/-sqrt(b^2-4ac))/(2a)
