For anyone reading this with similar probs i have found out what it was. Sufficient oil was not getting to lubricate the piston (think that as the bike had been stood for a long time this was caused by oil becoming very thick / the oil route through the carb getting bunged up) Should have changed the oil and cleaned the carb up! Because i didnt do those things the cylinder head / piston is covered in groves and needs replacing!
