This building has been the cause of concern to the Mimico neighbourhood for a long time. It is in bad shape, and it is not surprising that this fire started.
As for tenant insurance . . . the tenants in that building are poor. Many are on social assistance, others fall into the category of the working poor. They don't have $20 a month to pay for insurance, as they are having problems paying the rent and buying groceries.
There has just been another fire in a building downtown.
Tenants need assistance from the City in making sure that property standards are maintained, for all tenants, whether they have fire insurance or not.
Many of the households in this and other buildings like it are going to end up in the already stressed shelter system.
The City of Toronto has the power to prosecute the landlords of this building, and if some building inspectors were in that building, they would find a lot more than faulty wiring to issue work orders. If the landlords were paying attention, the grow-ops wouldn't have been there in the first place.
But the issue is: how many times is this going to happen to vulnerable people before somebody does something more than make emergency plans?
Service agencies in this neighbourhood are doing their best to assist these tenants in this crisis. As this building has had terrible cockroach problems, windows that don't close properly, filthy hallways, elderly kitchen appliances, bad heating system . . . a lot more needs to be done than replace electrical wiring before it is a livable building.

: This property has been in the news for the
: last couple of days. A fire in the third

: (including my son) being evacuated to a

: Today's development is that when authorities

: out they found not one but TWO marijuana
: grow ops! From what I understand it is
: suspected that these grow ops may have
: overloaded the buildings electrical systems
: and caused the fire.
:
: The fire marshall is involved and extensive
: electrical repairs will have to be done
: before tenants are allowed back in, possibly
: as late as the end of next week.

: I know my son is not the first tenant to

: Does anybody have first hand experience of a
