1) You need to be out by 11:59pm on the last day of the tenancy (usually the 30th or 31st of the month). In past you may have found landlords who were ok with you moving out the day after, but strictly speaking you've gotta be out by 11:59pm on the last day.
2) It sounds like your landlord is correct saying you need to be out by midnight (aka 12:00am) of May 1 - though everyone's better off if it's specified as 11:59pm of Apr 30 so as to avoid ambiguity.
However his threats of force or physicality are likely criminal (even as 'mere' threats) ... and if he so much as touches your body with his (and esp if you have witnesses) then he's into assault territory. Have a cellphone handy on your move-out day, you may be calling 911.
Personally, I would contact the police to notify them of his previous threats so that if you call the police the day of, they can have some record of a potential, pre-existing problem ... and may even contact the LL in advance to say that he's not allowed to touch anyone (or their possessions, unless he has LTB orders & Sheriff & all that).
But yeah, you oughta be out by 11:59pm.
