Together we are strong!

Thanks for your post George, but to be fair being a landlord is a legal business and they can have their opinions too.
I have been following some of the discussions on a landlord site, and I can tell you this....there are some decent people in the business, and they have some valid concerns...and some not so valid.
But, there are others who exemplify the worst in the landlord business....they attack tenant rights and any one who speaks in favour of those rights, they complain about everything, and their lack of civility makes me worry for their tenants. These ones show insensitivity to tenants who encounter real problems such as job loss. They also think they should be able to post their rantings on this discussion board.
I keep telling myself to ignore them, but there moderator is a decent guy, and I am hoping that they will see that the bad apples in their business are the biggest problem that they have.
Hopefully, our MPPs will care enough to take action before more people are losing their homes and lining up at food banks.
And yes, the Premier's former chief of staff came to him from the landlord group. His name escapes me for the moment, but we do not publish the names of private citizens any way.
I am getting lots of e-mails today supporting our call for action from the Government.

: Who cares what a landlord thinks - that is
: like worrying about what pimps or drug
: dealers think about the law.
:
: How can we fight this government and the
: Landlord Tenant Board and their outrageous
: gifts they always give to landlords?
:
: Tenants shouldn't stand for this.
:
: Should we call the Minister or complain to
: the tv stations about this ripoff?

: A landlord activist who frequently posts on
: another discussion board in a rather uncivil
: tone, would like readers of this site to
: know that in BC, the Government adds 2% to
: the rate of inflation to the annual
: guideline (3.7% this year), and that there
: are no rent controls in some other provinces
: such as Nova Scotia. So now you know.
:
: So, BC landlords get a gratuity and other
: Provinces leave tenants alone. Shame on
: them.
:
: We are a Toronto organization dealing with
: Ontario law, and we will stand up for
: tenants here. We can only hope that BC and
: tenants in other Provinces can similarly
: persuade their Government to bring in a
: fairer guideline or a rent freeze.
:
: By the way, operating costs for rental
: apartments are less than 50% of rent. The
: apartments were built decades ago at the
: cost of the times. The apartments are
: getting older, and the cost of building them
: is not subject to inflation. Units were
: built in the sixties for less than $10,000.
: We have paid for them over and over again.
:
: For 20 years, landlords in Ontario received
: a 2% gratuity on the annual guidleine (like
: BC), plus all sorts of above guideline
: increases. Enough was enough on the
: gratuity. Now enough is enough on rent
: increases.
:
: By some people's logic, the price of a used
: car should go up every year, not down.
:
: And all we want is for the price to
: stabilize. All this Canuck wants is
: fairness for tenants.

: The yearly inflation rate in May was only
: 0.1%.
: The yearly inflation rate for April was
: 0.4%.
: The inflation rate has been low for a long
: time now.
:
: It is obvious McGuinty and his Ontario
: Liberals are in the pockets of the landlords
: and have created a totally unjust system of
: `calculating" the guideline.
:
: How do we fight the government?
: Do we organize?
: Do we withhold our income taxes? Too late
: this year.
: Do we occupy and shut down the Landlord
: Enrichment Board?
:
: The next election isn't for 2 years so how
: do we fight these crooks?
:
: What can we do as individuals?

: Today, the Government of Ontario announced
: the
: 2010 rent guideline at 2.1%. This is
: shocking considering the tough economic
: times that we are in.
:
: The guideline is based on the average
: inflation for the last 12 month period.
: Recent reports of lower inflation gave us
: hope that the guideline would be lowered,
: not raised.
:
: In fact, it is time for the Government to
: take real action to protect tenants who are
: weathering these tough times. A guideline
: of zero - or in other words - a rent freeze
: is the least that they can do.
:
: The biggest single operating expense for
: multi residential buildings is property tax.
: They went up 1.3% in Toronto in 2009. Multi
: -res taxes increase at 1/3 the rate of
: homeowners, as a partial solution to the
: fact that we pay a much higher rate to begin
: with.
:
: Smaller rental properties do not pay the
: higher rate.
:
: Rents have continued to rise and the
: Government is sanctioning increases to large
: corporate landlords while individual tenants
: suffer.
:
: We will be calling on the McGuinty
: Government to bring in relief measures for
: tenants. Freezing rents would be a start.
