Ken, thanks for pointing this out. While I was aware that a deposit of this size is insane (but I was desperate for a place to stay at that time), I didn't realize it is illegal and that there is something I could do about it (In fact, I wasn't even aware of the T1 form for tenants before today, nor many of the grounds for taking legal action against landlords who treat their tenants unfairly, while knowing obviously certain things have been unfair).
After spending some time reading through advice from the ACTO website and other related places, I am debating whether it is worthwhile to go through with the process of filing a T1. I am currently seriously short on time, energy and other resources, and, while I'm happy that the steps involved seem to be clearly outlined, it sounds very tedious and I can't seem to find any indication of what kinds of outcome to expect, say if I do decide to bring this to small claims court. What kind of compensation is typical, for example? I understand each case is of course different, but if anyone can share any examples or experience, it will help a lot.
Thanks!
