my friend had to prepaid 9 months of rental money to the landlord in order to get the apartment. The landlord said since his parents doesn't have a job in Toronto (they have jobs in other province), prepaying 9 months of rental money is the only way to get the apartment. He signed the lease of agreement before he viewed the apartment. Now he doesnt want to live there. He did not live there, not even a day and he told the landlord that he cannot live there on the first day. He asked the landlord to give his money back after he found out that it is illegal to demand the tenants to prepay 9 months of rental fee but the landlord refused. The landlord said he should sub-let the apartment and he cannot give the money back since my friend signed the lease of agreement. (but who wants to rent an apartment with that condition?) All my friend wants is getting 7-8 months rental money back. Once he told the landlord that he would even hire the lawyer to get the money back, the landlord kinda agreed to give 7 months of rental money back to him. But now when he calls the apartment office, they are keep saying that the landlord is not available. When my friend gets to talk to the landlord, he keeps changing the words that he says something like giving only 6months of rental money back to him. What should he do? Any suggestion?
